THE STEEL PAN MAN
“The Steel Pan Man” follows steel drum musician, instructor and scholar Jahlani Roberts. While Roberts was born and grew up in Brooklyn, NY, his family has roots in the island of Trinidad and Tobago, where the steel drum, or, “the pan” originates. In this video, Roberts provides context surrounding the pan’s history in Trinidad and his own personal journey in growing to love the instrument. 
English Language Learners need a more equitable education.
 Primarily speaking Spanish and navigating through a new country that is predominantly English speaking, an English Language Learner said that he sometimes feels like giving up.
“When they all speak English, I don’t understand them,” the 13-year-old student said through an interpreter. In school, his class frustrates him.
This experience is common in Rockland County, NY where ENL public school students graduate at the rate of 33%.
Black students at SBU speak on statements of race.
This video features 5 Black students at Stony Brook University. They discussed the different values, experiences, and challenges they face as young people of color. This video received a Hearst Journalism Award in the Multimedia Narrative Storytelling Competition (2022) and an award from the Press Club of Long Island (2022).
