As of August 2020, public school students identified as English Language Learners in Rockland County, New York graduated high school at a rate of 33%. Compared to their native English-speaking peers with a 93% graduation rate, these students are not receiving a high quality education that will prepare them for successful academic or professional careers beyond the 12th grade. This project looks into the causes and effects of this discrepancy and accounts for students’ and teachers’ perspectives on the issue.
